Project Description
This project included a 358 bed (approximately 100%) expansion of the former Ararat Prison to create the Hopkins Correctional Centre.
SCG team members provided integrated security design services for the refurbishment and extension of Hopkins. On completion, the $500m project increased the prison’s capacity from 350 beds to 758 beds and included campus style accommodation, a therapeutic community for the older inmates and a special protection unit.
Other facilities constructed on site include a Gatehouse, Management and Support Operations Building, Reception/Discharge, Visits, Health building, Kitchen/Laundry, Recreation Building, Multipath, Education, Industries, FM Offices, Stores and Security Perimeter.
The Hopkins Correctional Facility was completed in 2015 and provides a modern facility for Corrections Victoria to operate and rehabilitate inmates back into the community. A key requirement of the project was for it to remain operational throughout construction and SCG team members developed the detailed plan to achieve this, including the cut over from old to new Gatehouse buildings and associated security control and equipment/server rooms.
SCG team members provided services for the temporary perimeter upgrade and expansion of the electronic security systems. The security design includes all new security systems, Security Control Room, Perimeter Detection, CCTV surveillance, Electronic Access Control Intruder Detection, Mobile Duress Alarm, and Accoutrement Management systems, as well as the integration of the former Ararat prison security systems into the newly expanded facility.
